Buying a computer with someone who knows what to check
Mark has gone shopping with clients to help them buy a computer worth keeping. The aim is to save money by choosing something that suits the person, rather than buying a bargain that soon needs replacing. Having someone there to translate the specifications can make the decision easier.
Start with what you actually do
Before looking at models, write down the programs you use and the things that annoy you about the current computer. Email and family photos place different demands on a machine from video editing or a particular game. Bring the model of any printer, screen or other equipment you want to keep.
Decide what the whole change can cost, including setup and moving files. A computer that uses the entire budget may leave you short when it needs an adapter, more storage or software that was not included.
Look beyond the sale ticket
Check the exact model and configuration being sold. Similar-looking machines can have different memory, storage and screens. Try the keyboard, read some ordinary text on the display and consider the weight if you will carry it often.
For a Windows computer, check Microsoft's current requirements as well as those of your own applications. Meeting the operating system minimum does not tell you how comfortably the machine will handle your work. Ask about repair and upgrade options before assuming either will be straightforward later.

- Is there enough room for your files and expected growth?
- What is included, and who handles a fault after purchase?
Arrange the help before buying
Tell Mark your budget, intended use and any models you are considering. Ask about shopping together or reviewing a shortlist, with the scope and availability agreed first. Sometimes checking the old computer is worthwhile before committing to a replacement.
Keep the old machine until you have checked your files and everyday tasks on the replacement. A worthwhile purchase includes getting back to normal use, not just getting a new box home.
