Check before you switch
Anti-cheat, launchers, mods and hardware can decide whether a move makes sense.
Your must-play list comes first
Pick the games you would miss most, including multiplayer modes. Check the publisher's current support and Steam's compatibility information. Proton lets many Windows games run on Linux, but compatibility is specific to the game and can change after an update. A different distribution cannot guarantee a fix for publisher restrictions.
Choose the experience you want
SteamOS is Valve's operating system, with device support that needs checking before installation. Bazzite offers desktop and supported Gaming Mode options for different hardware. Nobara focuses on a gaming and creator desktop. Mint and Fedora can also run games; choosing either does not lock you out of Steam.
Test more than the title screen
Check a real match or save, controller mapping, voice chat, audio output and the display mode you use. Include launchers, mods and capture software if they matter. Steam Deck verification describes that device's experience, not a performance guarantee for your desktop GPU or monitor.

Check the fit
Start with your hardware, essential apps and games. Agree on what needs to work and discuss the cost.
Protect what matters
Check a separate backup of your files and saves. Plan recovery before changing disks or replacing an operating system.
Settle in properly
Test your everyday tasks after setup. Walk through updates and backups, and keep a way back until you are satisfied.

A few things worth asking.
Will all my Windows games work?
No. Some games and anti-cheat systems do not support Linux or Proton. Check each essential title before changing operating systems, and keep Windows available if those games require it.
Will I get more frames per second?
There is no blanket performance promise. The game, graphics driver, hardware and settings all matter. Compare the same game and settings on your own machine where practical.
Are cloud saves enough?
Do not assume every game syncs every save or mod. Check the games individually and keep a separate copy of important local data before installation.
