Should you repair or replace your computer?

PC FIX-IT Perth,

A computer's age is only part of the decision. Start with what you need it to do, what has failed and what it would take to get back to work. A cheap repair can be worthwhile; a series of repairs on a machine that no longer suits you can be frustrating.

Describe the job before choosing the equipment

Write down the tasks that matter: email, schoolwork, bookkeeping, photo editing or a particular business application. Include the printer, scanner and other equipment you need to keep using. A replacement needs to handle those jobs, not just look faster on a specification sheet.

  • Which tasks are slow or impossible now?
  • Does the problem affect the whole computer or one application?
  • Will your existing software and peripherals work with the proposed replacement?
  • Do you need portability, a larger screen or more storage?

Separate the fault from the upgrade wish list

Ask what the assessment has identified and what remains uncertain. Replacing a worn battery solves a different problem from investigating repeated crashes. Extra memory cannot repair a failing drive, and a faster drive will not resolve every software problem.

For example, a desktop that handles your work comfortably but needs more storage presents a different decision from a laptop with a damaged hinge, unreliable charging and software it can no longer run. Compare the whole condition of the machine, including any known faults left after the repair.

Compare the complete return-to-work cost

For repair, ask about assessment, parts, labour and the point at which further work needs your approval. For replacement, include moving files, setting up email, reinstalling licensed software and reconnecting peripherals. Check whether you have the account access and installers needed before retiring the old device.

Software support also matters. Use Microsoft's current Windows requirements and eligibility guidance rather than assuming that a working computer can run a supported operating system. Ask how a proposed upgrade affects support before buying parts.

Protect the files before making the decision

Tell the repairer if the computer contains the only copy of family photos or business records. Data recovery and making the computer usable again may need separate decisions. Do not authorise a reset or disposal until the files and any recovery options have been discussed.

If a replacement makes sense, agree how you will check the transferred files and what happens to the old drive. Keep the old device safely until you have confirmed that the new setup does the jobs you depend on.

If the drive has failed, read about data recovery before anything is reset.

For missing files or a backup you cannot restore, start with files and backup help.
