Write down the programs you open each week, including accounting, photo editing, video calls and anything supplied by work or school. A website may work in a Linux browser while its desktop app does not. Test your real documents, printing and account access before deciding that an alternative does enough.
Choose Linux around the way you use your PC
Linux is a family of operating systems. A distribution bundles the desktop, applications and update tools. Mint is worth exploring for a familiar desktop layout. Fedora suits people who want a current general-purpose desktop. For a gaming machine, compare Bazzite, Nobara and SteamOS against your actual hardware and game library below.
Try it before replacing Windows
Where the distribution supports a live USB, you can try its desktop without installing it. Check Wi-Fi, sound, the webcam, external screens and sleep. A live session is an initial check, not proof that everything will work after installation. Keep your existing system available until the tasks that matter have been tested.

Can Linux make an old laptop useful again?
Sometimes. It depends on the hardware and what you need to run. Linux will not repair a failing drive, damaged battery or insufficient memory. We can compare setup work with a repair or replacement before you spend.
Can I keep Windows as well?
Dual boot may be possible, or a separate drive or computer may be simpler. Partition changes need a backup, recovery information and a clear plan. Work-managed computers also need the organisation's permission.
Is Linux free?
The distributions listed here can be downloaded without buying an operating system licence. Assessment, installation, file migration and support are paid services. Discuss the work and cost before booking.
