My second screen or laptop dock is not working

A laptop can work on its own while the desk screen, keyboard or other equipment does not. Describe which parts still work together before buying another dock or adapter.

Make a simple connection list

Write down the laptop, dock and screen models. Note which cable goes from the laptop to the dock and from the dock to each screen. A photo of the connections can help, provided no private information is visible.

Say whether the laptop screen works, whether the external screen shows a message, and whether equipment connected through the dock still responds. Mention if the problem starts only after reconnecting the laptop or returning to the desk.

Explain what changed

Include any new screen, cable, adapter or replacement laptop in your enquiry. Tell us whether the arrangement previously worked and whether one screen or every connected device is affected.

For employer-managed equipment, check with your IT contact before changing software or settings. Have them available if their approval or access will be needed.

Check the desk as a whole

PC FIX-IT can discuss workstation setup and connection checks. Tell Mark how many screens you want to use and what else belongs on the desk, including a printer, webcam or headset. Agree on the scope before purchasing replacement equipment.

At handover, check the tasks you use at that desk. Open an ordinary document on each screen and check the keyboard, sound and camera if they are part of your work. Include disconnecting and reconnecting the laptop if that is part of your day.
