I need my files back

Missing documents, an unreadable drive or a backup you cannot restore. Tell us what is missing and where it was stored so we can discuss the options.

How Mark helps

  1. Tell Mark what's happening

Call or send a message in your own words. You don't need the technical name.

  2. Agree the plan and cost first

Mark asks a few questions, explains the options and quotes the job. Work starts once you approve the quote.

  3. Fixed, checked and explained

Mark does the agreed work and checks with you before doing anything extra. Before he finishes, he goes over the result with you, so you know what was fixed.

How a job works, step by step

A useful first check

  • Check whether you have a separate backup, another device with a copy, or a cloud account you can safely view from another device. Note when you last saw the missing files.
  • For an existing backup, check whether it contains the folders you expected and when it last completed. A successful backup message alone does not show that a missing file is included.

When to stop and ask for help

Stop using a damaged or failing drive, especially if it clicks, disconnects repeatedly or has suffered a spill. Do not format it, install recovery software onto it or save recovered files back to it. Further writes may reduce recovery options.

What we can check with you

We can discuss whether the issue involves deleted files, a backup, a cloud account or failing hardware. Physical drive faults may need specialist recovery. For future backups, we can help check that a separate copy can actually be restored.

For a failed drive, SSD, USB stick or memory card, see data recovery for how the assessment works before any recovery attempt.

To check an existing backup, use our backup checklist you can actually verify.

If the files were on another computer or a NAS, see shared files and NAS access.

A damaged flash drive can need a different approach from a deleted file. Read about Mark's experience with flash-storage recovery and what to discuss before any repair attempt.

Your PC FIX-IT contact is Mark Zoro Segec. Tell him what you have already tried before arranging the next step.

Official guidance

  • ACSC: backing up files and devices: Official guidance for keeping recoverable copies of important information. It is a prevention guide, not a repair procedure for damaged drives.

What to have ready

  1. Tell us which device held the files, what happened and whether you have another copy.
  2. Mention any unusual noises, physical damage or liquid exposure before trying further fixes.
  3. Discuss recovery options and costs with us first. Recovery depends on the fault and cannot be guaranteed.

Talk through the options

Describe the problem, your suburb and the best way to reach you. We will discuss what help is appropriate and arrange a time if a visit is needed.
