I cannot access shared files or my NAS
A shared folder has disappeared, a document will not open or the office storage is unavailable. Start by finding out who is affected and what they can still access. Tell the person helping you if files appear to be missing.
Separate the affected tasks
Note which computer and user cannot reach the files. Ask whether another authorised user can open the same folder, without changing their account or permissions. Record the folder name and error, but leave confidential filenames out of the initial enquiry.
Say whether you can see the folder but cannot open it, open documents but cannot save changes, or cannot find the storage at all. Mention when the problem began and any recent equipment or account changes.
Preserve the files and involve the owner
If files are missing or the storage reports a fault, discuss preserving the data before attempting resets, replacement or further changes. Tell us what backups exist and when someone last checked a restore.
Identify who administers the server or NAS and who can approve work. Existing IT providers may need to be involved. Keep passwords, customer records and copies of private documents out of your enquiry.
Agree what restored access should mean
PC FIX-IT can discuss local servers, NAS and shared-file access. Have the equipment model, affected users and everyday tasks ready. Explain which work is held up so the assessment can account for your priorities.
Use a harmless sample file for agreed checks. Confirm that the intended users can open it and, where they should have permission, save a change. Discuss the backup check separately from restoring access to the folder.
