Files first
Before any repair, check what is backed up. Time Machine, iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos each cover different things, and a backup that quietly stopped months ago is easy to miss. If the Mac holds the only copy of your photos or work, say so first.
Do not erase the Mac or reinstall macOS to see whether it helps when those files matter. If the Mac will not start, getting the files off and getting it running are separate jobs. We can discuss both and agree which comes first.
A slow Mac or full storage
A Mac that is nearly out of storage slows down, fails to update and can refuse to open apps. Apple's storage settings show what is using the space. Common ones are photos, downloads, old phone backups and app caches.
Slowness can also come from apps that open at login, software too demanding for the Mac or ageing storage. Mark checks the cause before suggesting you buy anything.
Startup problems and macOS updates
Tell us exactly what you see: a black screen, an Apple logo with a progress bar that stops, a folder with a question mark or a circle with a line through it. Each points to a different stage of startup, so a photo of the screen helps.
An update that stalls is often short of space or was interrupted by power. Keep a MacBook on its charger while it updates. Older Macs eventually stop getting new versions of macOS. We can check what yours supports and whether it still gets security updates.
Moving to a new Mac
Apple's Migration Assistant can move your accounts, files and apps from an old Mac, or from a Windows PC. It works well when both computers are healthy and needs more care when the old one is failing.
Mark can plan the move, check that your mail, photos and everyday apps made it across, and help clear the old Mac before it is sold or passed on. Keep the old one until you are happy with the new setup.
What cannot be upgraded or swapped
On Macs with Apple silicon, memory is built into the chip package and cannot be upgraded after purchase. Storage is fixed on many recent models too. The size you bought is usually the size you keep, so an external drive is often the practical answer to a full Mac.
On recent Macs, parts such as the battery, display, Touch ID and logic board are finished with Apple's Repair Assistant, which calibrates the part to that Mac. Apple says a part that is not configured this way might not perform as expected. Mark will tell you when a repair is better handled by Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider.
