Is it a Wi-Fi problem or an internet problem?

PC FIX-IT Perth,

Wi-Fi connects a device to your local network. Your internet service connects that network to the outside world. Either can cause a frustrating video call, but the next useful step depends on where the problem occurs.

Wi-Fi problem or internet provider problem?

Choose one ordinary task, such as loading the same website. Try it on two devices using the same Wi-Fi, first near the router and then in the room where you have trouble. Confirm a phone is using Wi-Fi for the comparison rather than silently relying on mobile data.

Write down the device, room, approximate time and result. Keep other conditions similar. One isolated speed result cannot tell you whether a fault is in the device, Wi-Fi, internet connection or the service you are using.

If you still need the safe first steps, start with Wi-Fi and internet first checks.

  • One device fails everywhere: investigate that device and its connection.
  • Several devices struggle in one room: investigate local coverage.
  • Several devices fail even near the router: check the wider connection and provider status.
  • Only one website or application fails: check that service before changing the whole network.

Wired versus Wi-Fi comparison

If you already have a suitable Ethernet cable and know the router's local network ports, a wired laptop can provide another comparison. Do not unplug unfamiliar cables or alter the internet connection to perform it. If the wired connection is good while Wi-Fi struggles, that points to the wireless side rather than the provider link.

If you cannot make this comparison safely, leave it out. The device-and-room notes still help. In a workplace, agree any interruption with whoever manages the network before disconnecting equipment.

What to tell your internet provider

Check your internet provider's official outage page using mobile data if necessary. Record the router and connection-box lights without opening either device. Note whether the problem is constant, happens at particular times or began after equipment was moved.

Tell the provider whether multiple devices are affected and whether you tested near the router or over a cable. If your phone service also depends on that connection, mention that. Avoid a factory reset unless the responsible provider has explained how the required settings will be restored.

After the diagnosis, choose the next owner

If the comparison points to a service fault, stay with your provider. If it points to weak rooms or awkward router placement, a setup visit is more useful than more speed tests. The nbn home-setup guide below explains placement factors without replacing a local assessment.

See home network and Wi-Fi setup for coverage, routers and mesh systems once the fault is no longer a provider outage.
