SteamOS support is device-specific. A download is not proof that your PC is supported.
Start with the exact device
SteamOS is Valve's Linux-based operating system. Check Valve's current download and recovery guidance for your model before proceeding. Do not assume a Steam Deck recovery image is suitable for every handheld, laptop or desktop. For other hardware, Bazzite may be worth comparing after its own compatibility check.
Check your library beyond Steam
Bring the names of your essential games, launchers and subscriptions. Proton can run many Windows games, but anti-cheat and publisher support can block particular titles. Non-Steam launchers may need extra setup and may change independently. Check your full routine, including voice chat and local saves.
Keep a way back
An operating system recovery or reimage can erase existing data. Before any work, plan a separate backup and a recovery route for the system already installed. After setup, test controls, audio, Wi-Fi, sleep and your dock or TV. Check a game you actually play before calling the move finished.

Start with your hardware, essential apps and games. Agree on what needs to work and discuss the cost.

Check a separate backup of your files and saves. Plan recovery before changing disks or replacing an operating system.

A few things worth asking.
Can I put SteamOS on any gaming PC?
Do not assume so. Check Valve's current device guidance for your hardware. If your device is outside that support, we can compare other Linux options instead of treating a recovery image as a universal installer.
Is Bazzite SteamOS?
No. Bazzite is a separate project with its own images, updates and documentation. A similar Steam Gaming Mode does not make the two operating systems the same.
Can I keep my installed games and saves?
It depends on the existing storage and the installation method. Reimaging may erase them. Verify cloud sync and back up local saves before work; plan for downloads again rather than assuming the old library will carry across.
