Choose LTS or interim with a reason
Ubuntu offers long-term support releases and shorter-lived interim releases. LTS is worth considering when you want a longer period between major upgrades. Interim releases suit people who need newer components and are ready to upgrade more often. Check the current support dates and your application's supported Ubuntu versions together. Security coverage can differ by package and service, so avoid assuming every installed app has the same support period.
Try a normal working day
Ubuntu Desktop uses GNOME, which may feel different from Windows. Try opening applications, switching between windows and using an external screen before committing. Bring a real document, a video meeting requirement and your printer details. If work or school supplies a VPN or managed software, confirm Linux is allowed and supported. A browser login working once is only part of that check.

Try both desktops with your usual tasks. Mint may feel more familiar if you prefer a traditional menu and taskbar. Ubuntu may suit your workflow or application requirements better. The practical fit matters more than popularity.
Will Ubuntu work on an older laptop?
Check the current requirements and test the hardware first. Memory, drive health and the websites you use still matter. Changing the operating system will not fix a worn battery or failing storage.
